At its August 20, 2009 meeting, the Rotary Club of Concord presented Ambassadorial Scholar Fabian Mueller with a $12,000 scholarship for support of his year of graduate study in stem cell and regenerative biology at Harvard University. Mueller is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Merzig-Saarlouis in Germany, where he lives.
The Ambassadorial Scholarship program, the Rotary International Foundation's oldest and best-known program, was founded in 1947. Since then, over 38,000 men and women from 100 nations have studied abroad under its auspices. Today it is the world's largest privately funded international scholarships program. The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and among people of different countries. While abroad, scholars serve as goodwill ambassadors to the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with others the experiences that led to a greater understanding of their host country. In addition to sponsoring Ambassadorial Scholars, the Rotary Club of Concord provides scholarships to college students through the Concord Carlisle Scholarship Fund. To date in 2009, the Rotary Club of Concord has donated over $17,000 in scholarships to five graduating Concord Carlisle seniors and provided continuing financial support to three college students. On Tuesday September 22 the Rotary Club will sponsor the Thomas R. Huckins Memorial Golf Tournament to support its scholarship work. The tournament will be held at Wedgewood Pines Country Club in Stow. The public is encouraged to take part in this enjoyable event. The entry fee of $175 per player includes greens fee, golf cart, luncheon, buffet dinner, tournament gifts and refreshments. To register contact Joe Saia, 978-369-3872. Can't make the tournament?
