One of our favorite service projects has always been participating in a Build Day for Habitat for Humanity and Oct. 29th was no exception. Over 20 Rotarians, in two shifts gathered on a perfect fall day to volunteer our time and labor as we carried on our tradtion of “Service Above Self.” Our assigned task was to plant bushes around the foundation of  one of  three new homes in West Concord, on a new street named Assabet Bluff. These single family homes overlook the Assabet River and are adjacent to  the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail.

We began by adding the edging for the gardens around three sides of the home. Next we moved all the plants Habitat provided and decided where they should be planted before we dug the holes. There was much discussion about which plants needed sun or shade and a fair amount of googling care instructions! (What did we do before technology?) After we placed everything in the correct location we dug the holes, adding some new soil and topped the whole area off with bark mulch. Once that was completed everything needed a good soaking.

In between the morning crew and the afternoon crew we were treated to a delicious lunch of sandwiches provided by Habitat and soup and dessert made by our own Lee Labiento. As always, when we join together as Rotarians to get a service project completed, we have a lot of fun and laughs!
