In anticipation of a long and friendly rivalry, the Rotary Clubs of Bedford and Concord entertained their high school football squads, cheerleaders, school dignitaries and many guests at their combined meeting September 17 at the Nashawtuc Country Club. Speaker Fred Smerlas, former American football defensive lineman who was a 5-time NFL Pro Bowl selection during a 14-year career as a nose tackle with the Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots inspired the players (and the entire audience of 150) with his advice to "keep at it, don't give up, work on the weak areas." Presidents Christine Pinney and Steve Levitsky placed a twenty dollar bet, held by Ralph Hammond, to support the work of the Rotary Foundation. Winner of the $300+ raffle, parent of a Bedford player, also donated his prize to the Rotary Foundation. Now, on to the Thanksgiving game. May both teams win!
